Wildflowers of Cape Breton

Dates of Creation: [ca. 1903]

Physical Description: 1 sketchbook (36 watercolor paintings)

Location: Beaton Institute Archives

Reference: Beaton Institute Rare Books Collection

Scope and Content:
Item is a sketchbook kept by Louise McLennan that features studies of various flora found in Petersfield and Louisbourg, Cape Breton. Louise studied and painted various species of wildflowers in her spare time. The sketchbook includes watercolours of wildflowers including Mayflowers, Clintonia, Ragwood, Canada Lilies, and Harebells, as well as landscapes of the Margaree Valley and Oberammergau, Germany.

During the McLennans' stay at Petersfield, Louise McLennan introduced many rare types of plants to the area which are not found anywhere else in Nova Scotia. Her enjoyment of nature is obvious in these wildflower studies she completed.

The book was donated to the Beaton Institute by Louise's grandson, John Kendall.
